Honoring The Richness Of African Women.
In this month’s edition, As we celebrate Africa Day, we honour the richness of African identity, memory, and becoming through reflections from our founder & cohort members, alongside a reflection from one of our coaches Dr. Adama Kouyate on the significance of the day. We also explore the decolonisation of coaching and women’s development with insights from Dr. Charmaine Bendell, alongside reflections shared by faculty.
As we near the end of Q1, members of the cohort also reflect on their experiences in the fellowship so far, the growth, challenges, and moments of transformation that have shaped their journeys. We also hear from alumni who share honest reflections on life after the fellowship, the transitions they have navigated, and the ways the experience continues to influence their personal and professional paths.

Twice Honoured, One Inspiring Leader.
Dr Lulu Gwagwa, Founder and Executive Director of Traversing Liminality, has recently been recognised with two distinguished awards: the Gender Mainstreaming Award in the category of Positive Role Model, and the COMENSA Award in the category of Significant Social Impact.
These recent awards recognise not only her individual excellence, but also the depth and reach of the impact she has made in the lives of many young women. Under her leadership, Traversing Liminality continues to shape a growing network of empowered women who are contributing meaningfully to their communities and beyond. We congratulate our founder and remain inspired by the legacy she is building among African women.

This month, we reflect on the Enneagram workshop, where our 2026 Cohort from Malawi, Gabon, and Zambia share their deeply introspective journeys. Through their reflections, they share what the experience revealed, how it challenged them, and the personal insights they are carrying forward. Their voices offer a powerful glimpse into the impact of intentional self discovery.

This season marked a powerful transition within Traversing Liminality. On 7 February, we gathered for Valediction to honour the 2025 Cohort as they closed their chapter, celebrating their courage, commitment, and the profound journeys they have undertaken. Shortly thereafter, from 13 to 14 February, we hosted our Faculty Retreat in Johannesburg, South Africa, welcoming our Faculty of coaches and psychologists from across various countries on the African continent and in the diaspora. The retreat created a meaningful space for alignment, reflection, and strengthening the support structures that hold our community.

During the vision board reflections, I found myself in a state of awe and I realised that my 2016 long-term vision board needed a 10-year review. The gentle and calm energy of the facilitators, with their seamless flow creating the illusion of one voice, lulled me into the paradoxical illusion of life, allowing me to see, in my mind’s eye, the future dream already achieved.

On the 21st of November, Traversing Liminality joined the national shutdown as a proud supporter and advocate for the stand against gender-based violence and femicide led by the Women for Change organisation. The work of Traversing Liminality empowers women to be able to recognise abusive relationships and respond swiftly to improve their circumstances. Traversing Liminality also recognises that this is not, and should not be, the plight of women. Therefore, we are calling on all the Friends of Liminality to make it their responsibility to take responsible and lawful action against acts of violence against women and children.

The 2025 Annual Traversing Liminality walk taught me invaluable lessons about myself and the importance of community. I realised that even as an individual, I thrive with support and guidance from others ,the people of the uMzimkhulu community without even being aware poured so much into me, there was an older lady who I was walking behind in the steep hills and she kept encouraging us to keep going and said something along the lines of after this hill the walk is going to be so easy.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 700,000 people die by suicide each year. In Africa, where many nations face significant social and economic pressures, young people and men are disproportionately affected. Behind each number is a story, a family, and a community left grieving.
